Behind The shot With Flora van Wageningen

One photographer. One image. The story behind the shot.

One weekend during a particularly difficult time in my life I decided to take a solo break to the mountains. I was feeling particularly low, alone and adrift at this time in my life. The weekend turned out to be dull and dreary with snowfall predicted. Not feeling very inspired and quite low I wandered along the shoreline of Lake Minnewanka. There were low clouds and it was starting to gently snow. The diving platform was still anchored in the lake and hadn't been lifted yet for the winter season.

As I stood on the shoreline watching this floating platform isolated out on the lake in the sea of white with only a hint of Mt Girouad in the background I felt overwhelmed by the silence and beauty of the spot. It mirrored how I was feeling in that moment. Alone and adrift. This image has remained one of my personal favourites despite the lack of response on social media. It is the deeper connection I have with the image and the moment in which it was captured which makes special to me.
