Behind The shot With Thomas Hren
One photographer. One image. The story behind the shot.
I met Claudia because she wanted to buy a used photography book from me. When she came to my home, I invited her for a coffee, and what began as a brief encounter slowly turned into a long conversation.
At first, she seemed harsh, distant, and guarded. Yet this impression did not match the feeling I had about her. I sensed that something deeper was hidden behind her reserved demeanor. Shortly before she left, she told me that she had been abused as a little child. Her openness deeply moved me and left me astonished. Spontaneously, I asked her if she would like to do a photo shoot with me. In my work, I am not searching for perfect faces, but for people who carry a story within them. Claudia smiled faintly and said she would think about it.
A few days later, she stood in my studio. During the shoot, I began to discover a different Claudia: not the distant and defensive woman from our first meeting, but a deeply sensitive, warm-hearted, and loving person. At the same time, a certain distance remained, as though part of her was still trying to protect itself. Yet behind that restraint, I could feel her desire to truly be seen.
Many times she fought back tears, and I gave her the space to do so. Sometimes she sat in silence, covering her face with her hands or hiding behind her hair. Still, she allowed me to photograph her, as if for a brief moment she had decided not to keep her walls fully intact. Between us, quiet moments of trust emerged in which words no longer seemed necessary. We talked, laughed, and shared long silences together, and the day became far more intense than I had expected. Many photographs were created. But the real encounter began later, during the editing process. Never before had I seen someone appear so fragile, so open, and at the same time so full of warmth in photographs.
The images touched me deeply. As I looked at them, tears came to my eyes because I felt that I had discovered the true person hidden behind the walls and wounds of her childhood. In her gaze there was both vulnerability and strength — a quiet longing to be accepted despite everything she had lived through. This is exactly what I search for in my photography: the real human being, with hidden emotions and an inner world that often remains unseen. Not the surface, not the everyday mask, not mere appearance — but truth. For me, that is true portrait photography: revealing the person behind the facade, while preserving their dignity.
