Behind The shot With David Clark

I am lucky enough to have a modest summer home on a small island in Maine. I have spent a lot of time seeking out opportunities to make pictures here with the goal of not just being your average tourist photo.

The other day fog rolled in over the water and a backdrop of hills. Fog almost always present some great atmosphere especially for black and white. I shot a bunch that included a diffuse sun over the water but they just didn’t jazz me. I shifted the camera to the right and saw a white moored trawler with a dock in the foreground. At first I wasn’t happy with this either but in Lightroom I darkened the sky to give more contract and make it more ominous. I then added light to the boat and the dock to make them stand out a bit more. Finally a touch of texture and clarity to give the water more substance.

I think the result turned out nicely. No, not my best but strong enough to lay out my process in making it.
