LEARN THE LANGUAGE OF PHOTOGRAPHY: THE SECRETS BEHIND THE CRAFT PART 4
Focus is photography's way of saying "look here." Master sharpness, blur, and depth of field and learn to direct the viewer's eye with intention.
Part 4: Focus, The Language of Attention
Understanding Focus
Focus directs attention. Sharpness is only part of the story; focus in photography signals importance and intention. What you emphasize guides how the viewer interprets your image.
Key aspects of focus:
Depth of Field: Controls which elements are emphasized or de-emphasized.
Selective Focus: Directs attention to the subject while softening distractions.
Intentional Blur: Can create movement, emotion, or mystery.
Speaking Focus
To speak with focus:
Decide which element carries your message and emphasize it.
Use aperture and lens choice to control depth of field.
Apply motion blur or soft focus to convey movement or emotion.
Exercise:
Shoot the same scene with varying focus points. Observe how the message and feel of the image change.
Emotion & Storytelling
Focus signals what is meaningful. A sharp subject in a soft environment draws attention and emotional weight; blurred elements suggest memory, distance, or motion.
